A coalition of Christian pastors from Acadiana have sent a formal letter to Mayor-President Monique Boulet and members of the Lafayette City Council, requesting that the local government refrain from issuing proclamations or using public resources in support of Pride Month.

The letter, signed by pastors from churches in Lafayette, Milton, Opelousas and Vatican cites various Bible passages as justification for their stance. “We are called as pastors to reason with, to encourage and, when necessary, to rebuke those holding civil authority,” the letter reads.

The pastors affirm their belief that God created male and female in His image and that sexual relationships outside of traditional marriage are sinful, according to scripture. They take particular issue with the city’s past proclamations designating June as “Pride Month”, which they say are “divisive, ill-advised and unloving.”

Council Members Kenneth Boudreaux, Elroy Broussard, and Liz Hebert are singled out, in the letter,  for having supported such proclamations in the past. Conversely, Council Members Andy Naquin and Thomas Hooks, along with Mayor-President Boulet, are commended for not participating in those efforts.

The pastors end their letter by urging leaders not to promote or fund the annual Pride Parade or any related events using public resources. Download the letter here. <———-

What are your thoughts Lafayette?

  • Should City Council members use public resources and taxpayer dollars to officially recognize and support June as Pride Month?
  • Do you agree with the pastors? Why or why not?

We invite the people of Acadiana to contribute response articles. Respectful and thoughtful responses may be published in a future issue. Contribute here: https://337magazine.com/contribute/
