When it comes to Mixed Martial Arts talent, the Acadiana area can be considered a hotbed for putting prospects in the vaunted UFC octagon. And while it is great to celebrate the individuals who have made it to the apex of the sport, behind the scenes there are numerous martial artists grinding their way through the ranks, trying to earn that call from the UFC.
One of those individuals on the cusp of those Las Vegas lights is local fighting talent,
Scallan’s path to the cage began after a successful high school wrestling career that earned him a collegiate invite to wrestle at Wartburg College in Iowa. At the conclusion of his wrestling career, the fighter found himself back in Lafayette looking to scratch that competition itch when he found an outlet at UFC veteran, Tim Credeur’s academy, Gladiators Academy of Lafayette.
Scallan had his first professional bout in 2009 and has been on a tear ever since, earning numerous regional titles and even being called up to Bellator FC’s “Fight Master” reality show on the former SpikeTV (now Paramount channel).
The athlete only stopped competing for a brief stint from 2012 to 2017, in which he married his wife, Blair, and opened a gym of his own, Gladiators Academy of Youngsville.
Will He Be UFC?
Scallan has gone 4-1 in last 5 bouts, with his last win earning him the Bayou Fighting
Championship Fightville Welterweight title.
He knows that he is just one or two impressive wins from receiving that call from the UFC and he relies on his discipline and mental toughness to keep him focused on his goals.
If you want to watch Eric and witness the next step in his amazing journey, his next obstacle is a tough opponent in Jason Norwood on November 10 at WFC 97 at Cypress Bayou Casino.
