How to shop smarter
Sustainable fashion isn’t something most people think about, or even fully understand. But, it’s a big trend in the industry now, so it’s important for us style-lovers to be aware of this growing topic. Sustainable fashion is a garment that is used with fabrics that are sourced sustainably and/or produced in an ethical way and will last longer due to its higher quality.
It isn’t always convenient to shop these products and we each have favorite (and inexpensive brands) that we love to buy. However, our beloved fashion industry is responsible for 20 percent of the world’s water pollution, so any small step we take in the right direction can help. How? Here are 3 simple ways:
- Reuse – When you clean out your closet each year, consider donating your clothing to a local shelter. You can also bring the nicer items to a consignment store. Think about donating the money you make off these clothes to your favorite charity (an easy way to give back two-fold). And don’t hesitate to shop in these stores yourself; many women find designer duds for a fraction of the price buying from consignment or resale spots.
- Rethink – When you shop, consider the source. Look for natural fabrics, brands that use recycled materials or products that are made in the United States. Bonus if you buy locally-made goods! If your favorite stores don’t have any items like this, ask. Retailers love feedback and want to know what loyal customers want to see in their store.
- Build the Basics – Consider growing your wardrobe starting with the basics. Classic items are a great place to begin shopping sustainably because these items should last you the longest. They should be of great quality, natural fabrics and may cost a bit more. Read the care tags on these items – the key to making them last is caring for them in the right way.
Of course it may not come easily at first, but just like any practice we adopt (exercise, saving money, healthy eating), making small adjustments to shop sustainably can have lasting impacts in the future.
