Organizing a festive house
Fall is fast approaching, and life is about to get hectic! As schedules ramp up, so does the traffic of stuff that threatens to clutter the home that should be your family’s retreat. Kitchen tables get filled with homework papers and high traffic areas of the home get littered with everyone’s shoes, backpacks, and sports equipment. This time of year begs for an organization method that can easily be put into practice by all members of the family. Here are a few tips on how to enjoy a beautiful home, even in the midst of chaos.
#1 Choose the appropriate organizational piece for your family’s needs and position it in an easy to access spot. A lot of new homes are being built with mud rooms which is really nice, but for those of us who have to get more creative with the space, using a repurposed piece of furniture, hallway nook, or closet are excellent options. School lockers can also be a great way to consolidate the mess. Kids are more apt to use something that excites them. The hooks are great for gear and backpacks and it is easy to create simple shelves for shoes. Place storage bins in the shelves to house school supplies. Whatever you use, design the space around your family’s specific needs for this season so that it stays functional and organized.
#2 In the midst of hectic schedules, you can use decor to create a sacred time and space for your family to reconnect at the end of each day. The kitchen table is the perfect place to start! Get creative with your table, but keep it simple. An empty surface begs to be cluttered, but an elaborate centerpiece leaves no room for homework and other activities. As difficult as it may be, try to refrain from allowing your kitchen table to become a catch all. Have an inviting centerpiece but remember to keep it low so that it does not have to be removed during mealtime. Defining the table as a place for gathering as a family will help create a space for everyone to unplug from activity long enough to reset for the next day.
#3 Create an inviting entrance with a simple fall wreath. Having some festive accents in the home helps to remind all who enter to slow down and enjoy the fall season in spite of all the hustle and bustle. Cool weather is definitely something to celebrate and enjoy with the ones you love!
