LAFAYETTE, LA – Alysson Foti Bourque will release her newest book Oct. 23. The launch party for Alycat and the Friendship Friday will take place at 3:30 p.m. Oct. 27 at The Little Gym of Lafayette. This book is the third installment of the Alycat series. For her newest book, Bourque, a lawyer turned children’s author, encourages kids and parents to solve friendship issues with creativity.
Bourque won the Mom’s Choice Award for both Alycat and the Thursday Dessert Day and Alycat and the Monday Blues. She is also the recipient of the Benjamin Franklin Digital Award from the Independent Book Publishers Association (IBPA), a finalist of the Best Book Award and a Louisiana Book Festival Featured Author.
Bourque practiced law for six years before releasing her first book, Alycat and the Thursday Dessert Day. Inspired by her children and her childhood daydreams, her first book was released in 2016. Being a children’s author presented opportunities that Bourque never recognized throughout her career as an attorney — and she liked the new challenges and possibilities.
“Once I started writing and publishing books, doors started opening in ways I never imagined — and things just fell into place,” she said. “I was able to refocus on my childhood passions and abilities that I once strived for that were suppressed by real-life pressures. I can now say with complete confidence that I really love what I do.”
In her pursuit of success in the children’s book industry, Bourque has faced the challenging process of getting a book published and recognized. She says the rewards of combining her passion and hard work are worth the effort. Though she didn’t consider herself a creative person before becoming an author, she says Alycat allows her to make creativity a daily practice.
She particularly enjoys involving her kids in every aspect of her work. Ideas for her stories come from watching her daughter Izzy, age 9, and son Carter, 7, learn and grow. The two are fans of the Alycat books and enjoy promoting their mother’s works. Carter uses his increasing tech skills to work the projector for events, and Izzy showcases her singing talents.
Bourque sees books as a simple way to teach kids about life and problem-solving skills and hopes that parents use her books as teaching tools. In Alycat and the Friendship Friday, the characters learn how to bring new friends into the circle without leaving anyone out. The lesson focuses on the changing relationships in children’s lives and encourages kids to solve problems together so they can better themselves and their friendships.
Alysson Foti Bourque earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and a Juris Doctor degree from the Southern University Law Center. After practicing law for six years, she traded in writing trial briefs for writing children’s books. She enjoys public speaking opportunities at schools, conferences, and festivals nationwide. She hopes to inspire people of all ages to follow their dreams and believe in themselves. Currently, she resides in Sunset, Louisiana with her husband and two children.
