Carencro has landed an $8,600 state beautification grant for a permanent welcome sign and new landscaping at the I-49 Exit 4 roundabout — the city's main entrance and most visible gateway.

Carencro Is Getting a New Front Door

CARENCRO, La. — Every city has a front door. For Carencro, it's the roundabout at I-49 Exit 4, where thousands of drivers roll off the interstate every day on their way into town. And soon, that front door is getting dressed up: the city has secured an $8,600 state beautification grant to build a permanent welcome sign and new landscaping at the busy exit.

The project, first reported by KLFY, will put a proper sign and fresh plantings at the roundabout that serves as the city's main entrance — one of the most visible gateways into Carencro.

Small Grant, Everyday View

Eighty-six hundred dollars won't rebuild a road. But a welcome sign is one of those rare public projects you actually see every single day — for residents heading to work and for visitors deciding, in the span of a few seconds, what kind of town they've just arrived in.

City leaders say the project is about more than appearances: a permanent sign with maintained landscaping helps boost community pride, enhances the commercial corridor around the exit, and helps discourage litter in one of the most visible spots in the city. It's hard to argue with the logic. People tend to take care of places that look cared for.

A City That Lives at the Exits

Carencro has always lived off its position on the map — between Lafayette and Opelousas, straddling the interstate that stitched Acadiana together. The exits are how the city meets the world: travelers, truckers, new neighbors, and the businesses that set up along the corridor precisely because of all that traffic.

A welcome sign won't change any of that. It just states it, plainly, to everyone who passes through: this is Carencro, and somebody here is proud of it.

No timeline has been announced yet for construction. When the sign goes up, it'll be worth taking the Exit 4 roundabout a little slower — just to see the city's new front door for the first time.
