Lafayette landed a $28 million federal INFRA award plus state and local matches — a $50 million phase that funds the final engineering for the Kaliste Saloom–US 90 interchange, one of the nation's top 100 freight bottlenecks.

After Decades of Talk, the I-49 Connector Just Got Real

LAFAYETTE, La. — The I-49 Connector has been part of Lafayette's civic imagination for so long that it's easy to roll your eyes at any news about it. This week's news is different. Lafayette Consolidated Government has secured a $50 million federal and state investment for the Kaliste Saloom Road and US 90 interchange — one of the administration's most competitive funding wins to date, and the money that finally puts the project on a path to construction.

What Was Announced

The U.S. Department of Transportation awarded Lafayette $28 million through its INFRA program — the Nationally Significant Multimodal Freight and Highway Projects initiative — as part of $426 million in infrastructure investments across 12 states. Lafayette's share works out to about 6.6 percent of the entire national round.

The federal award is matched by $21.5 million from the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development and $500,000 from LCG, for a $50 million project phase. The partnership involved Governor Jeff Landry, DOTD, and the state's congressional delegation, including Senators Bill Cassidy and John Kennedy and Congressmen Clay Higgins and Cleo Fields.

What Actually Gets Built

The project transforms the existing signalized intersection at Kaliste Saloom Road and US 90 into a grade-separated interchange — ramps, flyover bridges, and roadway improvements along roughly 2.2 miles of Kaliste Saloom and 3.5 miles of US 90.

In plain terms: the red lights at one of Lafayette's most congested crossings go away, replaced by bridges that carry traffic over and past each other. The design also addresses conflicts with the nearby highway-rail crossing, one of the spot's longstanding safety headaches.

Why Here, Why Now

USDOT identified the Lafayette project as one that will eliminate one of the nation's top 100 freight bottlenecks. US 90 is a critical freight corridor connecting Interstate 10 to regional and national markets, ports and industrial facilities — which means the knots tied at Kaliste Saloom ripple well past the morning commute.

US 90 is a critical transportation and freight corridor for Lafayette and for Louisiana, DOTD Secretary Glenn Ledet Jr. said in the city's announcement, and this investment moves the state closer to a safer, more reliable and more efficient transportation network.

What It Means For Your Drive

For drivers, the promise is fewer queues, fewer at-grade collisions and more predictable travel times on a corridor that currently asks for patience. For the region, it's freight that moves and a commercial corridor that can grow.

It's worth being clear about what this phase buys: final engineering and other critical pre-construction work for the interchange, with construction anticipated in the next few years. Nobody is pouring concrete this month. But after decades of planning, redesigns and debate, the Connector finally has federal money with its name on it — and a mayor-president who says the momentum is real.

This is an exciting moment for Lafayette because, after decades of planning, we are finally positioned to move the I-49 Lafayette Connector closer to construction, Mayor-President Monique B. Boulet said. The Connector has been redesigned and refined, and we now have a project that will improve how traffic moves throughout Lafayette.

State Senator Brach Myers, whose district includes the corridor, called it the kind of investment that positions Lafayette to compete and grow for decades to come.

Decades of talk just became a funded project. In Lafayette, that's worth paying attention to.
