Nighttime drivers cruising the streets in New Iberia pass a building lit up with red and green neon lights. A cannot miss sign with a server donning a blue skirt decorated with a white poodle leans on a jukebox. Inside, there is a real, live working jukebox that welcomes each diner. All 1950s style, all diner, all the time – well – from about 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. except for Sundays.
On Center Street in New Iberia, about five minutes northeast of US Highway 90, Duffy’s Diner serves hot dogs, hamburgers, seafood platters, stews, comfort food and much, much more. The fried chicken (above) was served fresh out of the fryer. Pictured are three pieces of dark meat served on top of crispy on the outside and creamy on the inside traditionally-cut fries along with a fried pistolette. After a short cool-down period, each crispy bite of the chicken was nicely seasoned and juicy.
T-Birds, poodle skirts and leather jackets are optional.
