LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) -Summer heat and humidity continues around Acadiana Saturday with scattered storms developing in the afternoon. Highs reach the lower 90s with a feels-like temperature around 100 to 105 degrees. If you hear thunder, make sure you head indoors and let the storms pass. Lightning can strike up to 20 miles away from the nearest thunderstorm!

Overnight, temperatures drop into the 70s with high humidity. Sunday starts will quiet weather early, but storms develop earlier in the day as tropical moisture surges from the Gulf. This will lead to widespread rain through the afternoon with heavy rainfall possible. Highs will be closer to 90 degrees with the extra storm and cloud coverage.

In the tropics, a disturbance in the southern Gulf has a medium chance of development through the next day or so before it heads into Mexico. Models indicate a tropical depression or even weak tropical storm could form through the day today. The system moves into Mexico Sunday. Regardless of development, Acadiana will not see major impacts from this system. Higher swells will be possible offshore and rain chances will be higher Sunday as tropical moisture surges north off this system.

Locally, after a rainier day Sunday, drier conditions settle in for next week as drier air returns as high pressure builds to our north. Also, Saharan Dust will move in and leads to more vivid sunrises and sunsets as well as increased allergens. Pop-up storms will be possible each day but temperatures will climb into the mid 90s during the afternoon hours.
