Get closer to your style goals in just 3 steps
A new season tends to get us thinking with a fresh perspective, so what better time than now to re-evaluate your wardrobe? What you wear and how you wear it says a lot about you. What do you want to say through your look and how do you want to feel when getting dressed? Do you want to feel powerful and sophisticated, or do you just want to feel put together but like you didn’t try too hard?
Whatever it is you’re aiming for, below are a few tips to get there. These are the steps personal stylists take to help clients achieve their style goals.
- Closet clean out: Those pieces you haven’t worn in a couple years (or more) but think, “I’ll need it for a costume party one day” — it’s time to let go. Most of us hang on to much more than we need. And while there will always be those sentimental pieces we keep around, when you allow yourself to let go of the clutter, you will find getting dressed becomes much simpler and way less stressful.
- Fill up on the basics. These are the items you want to have around for a few years, so it’s worth spending a little more to get great quality basics. You are looking for pieces that fit you like a glove and speak to your personal style. Most of all, they work with your lifestyle (i.e. don’t invest in a $400 blazer if you chase kids around most days and prefer breezy layers). These key items will get you through those “I have nothing to wear” mornings like you wouldn’t believe.
- Don’t be afraid to get trendy. Once you’ve filled the core, work on finding a trend or two each season that is easy for you to incorporate into your wardrobe. Hint: every trend is not for everyone, so don’t be disappointed if the cold shoulder thing just isn’t working. That being said, keep an open mind and try to step outside your comfort zone every now and then. If the compliments come pouring in, you know you made the right choice!
